Pangea Day was a provoking journey into lives of people from around the world, that broadened our minds and changed the way we look at them. This initiative was started with the intention of bringing down barriers built around human beings, and to make people realise that every human from all walks of life wants peace, and if we can understand that both feel the pain and joy from the same reasons, the world would become better place to live in. We missed few films in the start, and out of the ones we watched, we will give you a peek into some of them. Inja In South Africa, a long-brutalized dog comes between a white landowner and his young black helper – with fateful results. The master of the house teaches the dog a lesson for being obedient to his black helper, who had befriended the dog. The master made the black boy put the dog in a sack and once closed, he kicked the dog until it was yelping in pain. Then he asked the boy to open the sack, and the boy did not want to open it as the dog would think he was the one who inflicted the torture. The master pointed a gun at the boy to force him to open it, and when the sack was opened the teary-eyed dog looked at the boy’s face and ran away. The documentary moved to the future where the dog is faithful to his white master and does not respond to the now black young man’s whistle, the way he use to earlier. The three of them go to the field, while doing a laborious task the white master gets a heart attack and falls on the ground, the black man runs to fetch his medicine, and the dog instinctively protects him from the black man, who he thinks had kicked him. The documentary ends with the master urging the black man to shoot the dog so he could give him his medicine. There is a gunshot without any visual, for you to interpret the end of the movie. Elevator Music Problems arise when a conservative old man walks into the same lift as a 15-year-old girl who likes to play loud music from her mobile phone. So the old man also turns on his mobile phone to some Beethoven. Another person enters the lift and starts listening to loud music on her cell phone, this continues until the lift is full of people with their mobiles screeching their genre of music. Then enters a Afro man with a boom box, which attracts everyone’s attention, as they slowly put off their music, while the Afro man rewinds his cassette. He then hits play and puts his ear plugs on, leaving the rest of them to question themselves. I Remember Lebanon After years of civil war, most Lebanese were coming to terms with their nation’s past and looking forward to a peaceful future. Director Zeina Aboul Hosn visited Beirut a week before the war began. This film is a journey through her memories of Beirut as the bombs started falling. Watch the video below to watch this emotionally stirring film. Israel-Palestine Peace Process Some of the documentaries were also an eye-opener. At a time when the media only writes about the turmoil surrounding a country, for instance, the Israel-Palestine conflict, no one mentions the peace initiatives taken by the bereaved families who have lost their immediate family members in this war. One of the founders of ‘Combatants of Peace,’ which comprises former Israeli and Palestinian military personnel, who have left the military to come together to shed light on such a peace initiative and discourage people from waging war. The Israeli combatant was in a state of shock and deviated from his speech as he told us his story of loosing his mother and brother in a peaceful demonstration held at the Gaza strip by Israelis and Palestinians to end the war. The Israeli military opened fire and killed the demonstrators in cold blood. In between documentaries, they showed bytes of people from different countries from different walks of life, asking them simple questions like what makes laugh, what makes them angry or what’s their worst fear? The answers were amazing, like for an African woman her fear was a fight with her husband, for an old man from Ethiopia was to lose his land on which has ancestral value. There were two events where the audience from around the world participated together. One was a laughter session, based on the laughter clubs which are stress relievers and have sprouted all across the world. We all threw our hands up in the air and burst out laughing, along with actress Goldie Hawn and Dr Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Club. It was a wonderful experience. World Drum Beats The second one was the climax of this four-hour event, where group of drummers from different parts of the world were playing their regional drums on center stage, accompanied by drummers in individual countries where the show was being telecast live, including Mumbai, Brazil, London, Eqypt, that got everyone in unison to this magnificent drum roll. At the end of it, the message was loud and clear, peace must prevail and forgiveness is form of hope for a better future. Everyone gave a standing ovation at this innovative concept. These couple of hours took us on a global journey of looking deep inside the hearts of people and realising that we all want the same thing – peace and non-violence. Its only the political parties that creates division among us humans.
